Headingley's Cafe Scientifique was the second to open in Leeds, launched in 2006 as a community facility under the auspices of Headingley Development Trust. Meetings are usually held on the first Monday of each month, though this can vary.
Attendance is always full and enthusiastic - an indication of the high levels of interest in the idea of Cafe Scientifique generally and on the part of local residents particularly. The friendly atmosphere, informal setting, stimulating speakers and very reasonably priced Bar all help to bring people back!
We welcome participation at all levels, including in the organisation of the events and ideas for speakers and topics.
The programme is as varied as we can make it. Past topics have included global warming, memory, genetic manipulation, nanotechnology, transport, research integrity, the politics of food, anti-matter, the psychology of pain, a debate on nuclear power, and a reading of the play 'Copenhagen'.
Topics for the future include polymaths, the philosophy of science, biofuels, gender issues in medicine and artificial intelligence and computer games.
Meetings are open to all and we ask for a contribution of £2 on admission, towards expenses for the evening.
All meetings are from 7.45pm - 9.30pm at New Headingley Club
