Celebrate Headingley with us!

Re: [chat] Celebrate Headingley with us! Lesley

Sorry not to attend any this year, I was a way on leave for 2 weeks out of UK.  A postponed holiday, rescheduled from earlier in the year and it’s date clashed with quite a few things I would like to have bee part of.

Hope it was a good one on the q0th anniversary?

All best

Pam

Dear friends

It's Celebrate Headingley weekend! Sorry to use both lists here, but I wanted to get to a wide range of people.

Headingley Network is hosting the 10th weekend of events which are aimed at celebrating the good things about our community. I have just realised that our first ever CH event was on Sept 8th 2001 - only three days before the world changed. What a long time ago that feels.

Of course, our little corner of the world is not likely to bring world peace or change large-scale political ideologies, but I do think that in small ways, since 2001 we have been moving in the right direction. Headingley Network's idea to hold a celebration in the wake of a rather crushing (and costly) defeat in the Crown Court (over the opening of a pub - the Box) was the spark that made us realise that positive events could do as much, if not more good to a community as negative ones. Amongst those things that have happened since then are the rise of other festivals, such as Headingley LitFest and the Headingley Music festival which started this year. There have also been major pieces of work such as the Headingley Renaissance Document, produced by community members, to try and influence planning decisions in the future.

From this concept - building on the positives - and with a loan of some much-needed cash from Headingley Network, Headingley Development Trust (HDT) was born. The Farmers' Market, the buy out of the Natural Food Store, the setting up of the Café Scientifique, the setting up of Headingley Homes, the founding of the community orchard and the production of the Neighbourhood Design Statement are the successes so far, and they will be quickly followed by our biggest project to date - the opening of HEART in early 2011!

For those of you who are confused - Headingley Network and HDT are NOT the same! But many of the same people work in them. HN is still a community organisation, which is still committed to fighting inappropriate planning and licensing applications as well as organising uplifting events like Celebrate Headingley. HDT is a social enterprise - a business - which ploughs all or any profits back into community-building projects. Please take the opportunity this weekend to join Headingley Network - it doesn't cost anything! There will be membership leaflets at most of the events I hope!

So - what's on? Here's the listing - I hope to see you at some of the events!
