Headingley Development Trust finds the Council has a HEART!
After three years of campaigning, planning and raising money, Headingley
Development Trust, a membership organisation of over 800 residents and
supporters, has been granted the chance to bring a new kind of community
facility into being.
On Wednesday 4th March, the Executive Board of Leeds City Council agreed to
allow HDT to take over the former Headingley Primary School on Bennett Road
in Headingley and develop it into an enterprise, arts and community centre.
The centre, called HEART, will provide meeting and performance space for
residents and organisations, and a new centre for local people wishing to
start a business without having to spend a great deal on overheads.
Richard Norton, Chair of HDT, welcomed the news and said "We are grateful to
the council for this opportunity. We are determined that this facility will
change the nature of life in Headingley by being a meeting point for all its
residents, and the beginning of a more sustainable and stable community. We
look forward to welcoming recent graduates and long-term residents alike
into the HEART of their community."
